Friday morning thoughts at the gym

PITTSBURGH (FFD) So here I am up in early and at the gym again as I have been every day during the M-F weekdays for the past 2 1/2 weeks.

I hit the gym in the morning yesterday and I am there now… Give my freaking touchdown.

The gym in the morning is a different animal from the nighttime workouts I used to have. I will admit I like the gym better in the evening because it’s less crowded and I have a full run of the house with little wait and I always get the best machines and my preferred elliptical and I even get to pick my own TV station. Nobody seems to go to the gym at night.

The problem was that I didn’t go that often in the evening.
Doing the Warrior’s Diet intermittent fasting 20-4 approach, I would be pretty hungry towards the evening. Far too often the family would want to go out to eat or have a meal and it would just be too much to say no to. After I eat, I am kind of done with the gym. I am in relaxation mode. Hell, I might be in beer mode.

But, I changed that habit. I wanted to give the morning routine a shot.

Went to the Wheelfish. Love the food there. However, this evening… conversation was hard to find. I left and returned home, picking up Pizza’s for the kids. It was at home, I found the connection and warmth I didn’t get at the bar. Maye that is an insight I need to pay attention to?

Almost 3 weeks ago I decided I am going to try to make it a habit to go to the gym each morning. I hated this at first, but things are starting to change. I get in I get out and get on with the day. I notice I have more time in the evening to get back to some of my more creative pursuits too. So all in all I am building a good habit here. I have coffee, and go to the gym. I don’t need to pack a bag I just go and come back. So there’s no time prepping a bag for the gym.

I’ve also met a couple regulars in the morning, guys my age, and we bullshit about the news of the day and what the Steelers are up to.

I won’t venture into the men’s locker room in the morning other than to hang up my hoodie and hat. There is just far too many naked old guy sitting around shooting the breeze. The gym I belong to is right across from the senior citizens type of apartment building. Plus I have learned that the gym I belong to offers free memberships or it’s paid for by many types of insurance plans that seniors have and so we simply get a lot of older folks here.

Dare I say I am fast becoming one of those older folks. I am 48 and I am no spring chicken. I am some kind of in the middle young guy and an old guy.

Give my FG. I did about an hour at the gym yesterday. Back today for another FG on The Football Fan’s Diet.

I think the most important thing though is that I go each morning on the weekdays and it is a habit. I’m still committed to this idea the excellence is a habit. If I want to be healthy I need to build healthy habits. Getting up having coffee and going to the gym is now a habit.

On the weekends, I change it up a bit. The weekends I am now reserving for working in the yard if the weather permits. On the weekends, I can do an afternoon work out if I need it.

I also like the idea of simply going every day. I know you need to rest, but for crying out loud I said down at a computer all day and I think I need a bare minimum of 30 minutes of cardio a day no matter what—whether I’m tired or not. There are some days I just lackadaisically do the elliptical and there are other days where I kill it and work up a sweat.

These are the days that are habit building. I look forward to more of them. That’s it for today, I hear the whistle in the game of Health has started once again. Time to keep those habits going strong.
