PITTSBURGH (FFD) — I stumbled upon something yesterday on my intermittent fasting 20/4 diet as I met a friend for a couple of beers. I was torn before getting there as to whether I should limit my calories during my intermittent fasting eating window of 4 hours, and go with light beer and drink at the normal pace I always do. This pace is somewhere on the same level as an aquatic animal that drinks water to live.

My alternative was to order a craft beer and then not really care about how many calories I had. What the heck—just enjoy the evening!

But, something strange happened to me during our evening out. I ordered the craft beer and kind a sipped the damn thing. What, me sip a beer?

What an alien concept. Savor the flavor? Appreciate the beer—extend the drinking time of the beer and get more out of those glorious hops and heavenly barely by not drinking it so fast?

I did that and it worked. I actually got more out of my beer because I drank it twice as slow. I had fears that might impact my reputation. “Say it ain’t so Scratch.”—I could hear my friend’s telling me. “Scratch is becoming a Two Beer Pierre.”

Say what? No way. Not me.

Two Beer Pierre was a disparaging label for friends that didn’t pound ‘em like we did in High School. Yes, I admit we drank beer in high school.

However, I am not in high school any longer. That was years ago. I have become an adult and have grown as a person—largely around the waist.

But now is now and I am doing this intermittent fasting 20/4 plan to loose all this beer weight I heaped upon my bodice over the years.

Sipping a beer? Hmm. Now that is a novel idea to a beer swilling man like me.

Intermittent Fasting Tip: Slow down the beer drinking Scratch

If I did that, how long it would take me to drink one of those bottles of beer?

I could hear the song in my head—“Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall… Ninety nine bottles of beer… Take one down…”

I won’t get into how fast it “normally” takes me to down a bottle of Sam Adams Boston logger but I will tell you it is typically pretty darn quick affair.

Intermittent Fasting Tip: Quite double sipping the beer Scratch

In any case my experiment had me preventing myself from automatically double sipping my beer. Typically I would take a swig of my beer set it down and then quickly have another sub. For this experiment, over beers with my friend, when I want to have a sip I stopped myself and I waited—and waited twice as long as normal. Then I drank.

Intermittent Fasting Insight: Savor the flavor during the eating window

The end result was pretty amazing. The beer tasted even better than normal because it was more of a precious commodity to me now. Even better, I met my Daily Gameday Objectives for the day which is to stay under 2,200 calories during my eating window on the Intermittent Fasting 20/4 approach.

So something happened to me on the way to the bar yesterday and it was called sensibility. My advice is if you like to pound beers, which I have been known to do in the past, quite double sipping your beer and extend the time you normal consume a beer by a factor of two. Your health and your budget will thank me for it later.
